"MUSTANG SALLY"
The world premiere o f Linda Felton Steinbaum's timely play practically ripped from the pages of our daily newspapers about sexual abuse towards children in her compelling "MUSTANG SALLY." It is a frightening saga of a woman Kathy (Sally Conway), who has had to resign her position as a music teacher at the public school because she was having an affair with a 13 year old boy. This simple, very damaged woman whose apartment looks like a child's room, is designed by Chris Winfield. Her clothing is also way too youthful, and may have been purchased at a thrift store, as some of the pants she wears are from the psychedelic 60's. Tina Rose did clever costumes. Her successful older sister Elizabeth (Andrea Conte), has called a friend Edward (Michael Blain-Rozgay), who is an attorney to help straighten out this deplorable situation. The inappropriate behavior could send her to prison. She has a fellow teacher Tony (Sean Vincent Biggins), a good friend who has come to give support. All hell breaks loose when mom Marilyn shows up. Marilyn, a tour de force performance by Tish Smiley, shows us what might have gone wrong in Kathy's life to make her so insecure. Mom is so off the wall, and fruit never falls far from the tree. Kathy actually believes she is in a committed relationship. The biggest bombshell comes in the second act, which I will not divulge.
The performances are solid, especially Conway as Kathy. Director Arturo Castillo has a good handle on staging these events, but I would definitely get rid of the intermission.
